Megan Burch was awarded a $2000.00 student grant to continue her studies with Lone Star Virus and Christian Miller also won a $2000.00 grant to continue his work on CTFV! We also had a poster presentation by Rachel Porter, and talks by Sarah Owen and Stephanie Beane. Congratulations to everyone for your hard work and dedication!

New Interdisciplinary Publication!
New work from the laboratories of Dr. Venta and myself are hot off the presses. Trisha Brewer was completing a study in my lab and generated the IL-6 and transferrin data that helped to get this paper out. Congrats to everyone!

Out and About for Halloween!
Several of us ventured out of the lab to celebrate a lab birthday with haunted houses. There may have been some screaming, pushing (Christian), and a bit of swearing, but we had a good time and survived. ​October 2021.

Ammie is a 2nd year medical student who spent her summer doing research in our laboratory studying the molecular epidemiology of Bartonella in the fleas of companion animals. This September she presented her research at the COM Research Day Symposium. Congratulations Ammie!

Stephanie Beane won the 2021 1st place award in the M.S. student grant competition for her project investigating Colorado tick fever virus mediated vascular dysfunction.
Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program
Sarah Owen won a Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research award for the October 2020 cycle for her project: Colorado Tick Fever Virus Mediated Apoptosis in Human Endothelial Cells.

The Texas Society for Microscopy Small Grant Program - 2021
Stephanie Beane won a TSM small grant award for her project investigating Colorado Tick Fever Virus Mediated Vascular Dysfunction.

American Society for Microbiology - Texas Branch
2020-2021 Eugene & Millicent Goldschmidt Graduate Student Award
Sarah Owen won the 2020-2021 Eugene and Millicent Goldschmidt Graduate Student Award for the Texas Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. This award recognizes female graduate students studying microorganisms and was established in 2011 by the Texas ASM branch through a generous donation by Millicent Goldschmidt, Ph.D.. Dr. Goldschmidt is a professor emerita at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. This highly competitive award was named after Goldschmidt and her late husband, Eugene Goldschmidt, M.D.

Joey Harrison Biological Science Student Research Award 2020
Sarah Owen and Luis Lopez were recipients of the 2020 Joey Harrison Biological Science Student Research Award to study tick-borne infections at SHSU. Sara will continue her studies with Colorado tick fever virus and Luiz Lopez will continue his investigation into the microbiome of Ixodes scapularis ticks from Western New York.
